What Is Email OSINT?

Email OSINT, or email open-source intelligence, is the process of reviewing email-related information that may help support an investigation. This can include sender addresses, email headers, domain names, links, timestamps, attachments, usernames, recovery emails, platform notifications, and other clues connected to an email account or message.

In crypto fraud cases, email evidence may help identify fake investment platforms, phishing attempts, fake exchange support messages, recovery scams, impersonation attempts, and communication patterns used to pressure victims into sending funds.

Why Email Evidence Matters

Email messages often contain important clues that disappear or become harder to verify over time. A scam email may include links to fake websites, payment instructions, wallet addresses, fake support contacts, login alerts, withdrawal denial messages, or threats demanding additional fees.

Preserving email evidence can help build a clearer timeline of what happened, how the victim was contacted, what the scammer claimed, and what actions were taken before or after funds were sent.

Email Clues That May Be Helpful

Helpful email evidence may include the full sender address, subject line, date and time received, reply-to address, email headers, links inside the message, attachments, screenshots, platform names, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, and any follow-up communication connected to the same sender.

Whenever possible, save the original email instead of only taking screenshots. Screenshots are helpful, but original messages and full email headers may provide additional technical details.

Important Safety Reminder

Do not click suspicious links, download unknown attachments, reply to scammers, send more money, or provide passwords, seed phrases, private keys, two-factor codes, or recovery words. Email OSINT should be used to preserve and organize evidence safely, not to confront the scammer or access accounts without permission.
